SoTL Workshop on Research design_ Mahikeng Campus In-Person
The purpose of the workshop:
This is a qualitative research design workshop. This SoTL research design workshop focuses on research questions, problem statement, conceptual framework and alignment with methodology. This opportunity is aimed at academics and professional staff conducting research in their focus areas who are conceptualising a research study as part of a SoTL project or who are in the process of drafting a proposal application for the funding of a SoTL project.
- to address the research design of a study in terms of formulating the problem statement and writing the conceptual framework;
- construct an appropriate research question; and
- align research questions with the problem statement, theoretical/conceptual framework and research methodology.
At the end of the workshop, you should be able to:
- identify the purpose of a project / study
- justify the relevance of the study
- write a problem statement
- develop a research question(s)
- link the aims and objectives to the (main) research question
- identify and motivate the theory / framework that anchors the study
- select suitable approaches for generating and analysing data
- submit a draft proposal application
Summary programme outline:
You are required to attend and participate during this two-day workshop; attendance and feedback will be recorded as the SoTL Office reports on this CPL opportunity.
Pre-requisites:
Draft of your relevant literature review and/or draft ethics application template.

Registration:
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis as seats are limited to 25 participants for this training opportunity. There is a waiting list but you will receive confirmation that you are registered; if you do not receive confirmation, there should be another opportunity in 2025/2026 depending on the demand or requests for a similar training opportunity.
Accommodation and transport:
Only participants from the Mahikeng Campus and the Vanderbijlpark Campus may travel and stay over as part of the arranged travel and accommodation. The accommodation is only for Tuesday, 15 April 2025; no travel and accommodation will be covered before or after these dates and the CTL SoTL Office is not liable for any additional expenses incurred by participants. No day monies/allowances may be claimed.
