Teaching & Learning AI Workshops for Lecturers (MC) 2025-07-21 In-Person
Purpose:
The purpose of the 1-day workshop is to support academic staff to critically engage with and effectively integrate artificial intelligence (AI) tools into teaching, learning, and assessment practices.
In response to the evolving higher education landscape, these sessions aim to promote pedagogically sound, ethically grounded, and policy-aligned use of AI.
Lecturers will explore practical applications of AI that support student learning while upholding academic integrity and institutional values.
Outcomes:
By the end of the workshop series, participants will be able to:
- evaluate current assessment practices through the lens of the AI Assessment Scale (AIAS) and identify opportunities for responsible AI integration in diverse teaching and assessment contexts;
- apply concepts and strategies from the “AI in Assessment” lecturer course to redesign or enhance at least one current assessment using AI;
- interpret recent changes to institutional policies related to academic integrity, including the revised Academic Integrity Policy, Teaching and Learning SOP, and guidelines for ethical and responsible AI use;
- explain the pedagogical and ethical implications of AI use in assessment and learning, particularly concerning plagiarism detection and Turnitin functionalities;
- utilise a curated AI toolkit to create or enhance teaching and learning materials, including assessments, multimedia content, tutor bots, and other digital resources; and
- demonstrate how AI tools can support inclusive, engaging, and contextually relevant teaching practices within the South African higher education environment.
Programme:
- 09:00 – 13:00 AI & Assessment
Evaluate current assessments and learn how to practically incorporate AI on different levels of the AI Assessment Scale. This workshop is based on the new AI in assessments lecturer course.
- 13:45 – 15:00 AI & Academic Integrity
The changes to the Academic Integrity Policy, the T&L SOP, Guidelines for ethical and responsible AI use, and Turnitin guidelines will be discussed.
- 15:15 – 16:00 AI Toolkit for lecturers
A basic AI toolkit for lecturers will be showcased and made available to assist in creating assessments, images, videos, tutor bots, podcasts, etc., for teaching and learning purposes.
