Why shouldn't I miss this!

How accessible is your online course? What steps can you take to make it more accessible? As the number of offerings moving online continues to grow and various accessibility initiatives become more stringent, it is crucial that accessibility for all students be a focal point of the course design process. Most of the accessibility components are simple to understand and implement once the designer is aware of the tools and techniques available to them.

Purpose of the APD opportunity:

The heart of this asynchronous, week-long workshop will focus on ways to meet accessibility criteria through three important components including general universal design practices, creating accessible multimedia, and creating accessible documents. This workshop is sure to add helpful techniques and tools to your accessibility toolkit in order to become compliant and inclusive.

Outcomes of the APD opportunity:

At the end of this workshop, the participants should be able to:

  • Identify challenges and barriers that students with disabilities (visual, auditory, physical, and cognitive) often experience in the online course environment;
  • Recognize the most important accessibility features to follow when designing and delivering online courses, including general Web accessibility guidelines, creating accessible documents, and creating accessible multimedia;
  • Evaluate the accessibility of your course materials;
  • Develop an action plan for course improvements.

Expectations:

This is an asynchronous, week-long workshop that will begin on a Monday and end on the following Sunday. The workshop will require approximately 6-8 hours of work, including reading research-based articles, viewing presentations, engaging in online discussion forums, and submitting assignments. The total length of time to completion: 7 days.

Requirements:

Participants are expected to access the link for the online seminar sent to their NWU email address, and upon completion, provide feedback on the online seminar. Participants will be required to upload their certificate of completion in the section provided on the feedback form.
