Block teaching - process and pedagogy 2022-08-25 Online

Kindly note: Registrants will receive an email communicating the relevant information.

Purpose of the CPD opportunity:

This workshop aims to introduce lecturers to block teaching as an alternative to the traditional timetable approach.

Changing from the traditional 45 – 50 minute contact sessions to a 2 – 4 hour contact session requires changes in processes and pedagogy.

Block teaching may hold many advantages for both students and lecturers, but it can also be detrimental to students’ success if teaching, learning and assessment are not adapted to the longer contact time.

In this workshop, we will look at the different approaches to block scheduling, the advantages and disadvantages, and we endeavour to arrive at the best pedagogical approach for the university environment.

Outcomes of the CPD opportunity:

Participants will be able to:

  • understand what block scheduling and block teaching entails;
  • critically compare block teaching to teaching in traditional timetables; and
  • evaluate their own teaching and assessment practices against the requirements for effective block teaching.
